When used to treat severe alcoholic hepatitis, i.v. acetylcysteine serves as an antioxidant and glutathione source. A trial of 174 patients with severe alcoholic hepatitis revealed that patients had 28-day survival benefit when treated with acetylcysteine; improvement in patients with hepatorenal syndrome was also noted.
The amount of alcohol intake that puts an individual at risk for alcoholic hepatitis is not known, but the majority of patients have a history of heavy alcohol use (more than 100 g per day) for two or more decades ( figure 1 ) [ 3-5 ]. While asymptomatic steatohepatitis due to alcohol could be referred to as "alcoholic hepatitis," the term is typically used to describe the acute onset of symptomatic hepatitis. The amount of alcohol intake that puts an individual at risk for alcoholic hepatitis is not known, but the majority of patients have a history of heavy alcohol use (more than 100 g per day) for two or more decades ( figure 1 ) [ 7,8 ]. 2020-02-18 Alcoholic hepatitis is hepatitis (inflammation of the liver) due to excessive intake of alcohol. Patients typically have a history of decades of heavy alcohol intake, typically 8-10 drinks per day. It is usually found in association with fatty liver, an early stage of alcoholic liver disease, and may contribute to the progression of fibrosis, leading to cirrhosis. 2010-12-01 Alcoholism severely affects the liver and can lead to death.

BACKGROUND Mortality among patients with severe acute alcoholic hepatitis is high, even among those treated with glucocorticoids. We investigated whether combination therapy with glucocorticoids plus N-acetylcysteine would improve survival.

Severe alcoholic hepatitis (AH) has high mortality. We assessed the comparative effectiveness of pharmacological interventions for severe AH, through a network meta-analysis combining direct and indirect treatment comparisons.

Hepatitis involves an inflammation of the liver, which diminishes the liver's ability to function. Hepatitis occurs as three different viruses — hepatitis A, B and C — and it might happen for several different reasons. Hepatitis A occurs du Hepatic steatosis is essentially fatty liver.

Conclusions: Although combination therapy with prednisolone plus N-acetylcysteine increased 1-month survival among patients with severe acute alcoholic hepatitis, 6-month survival, the primary outcome, was not improved.
N -acetylcysteine could have value as an antioxidant in the treatment of acute alcoholic hepatitis, because the thiol group in N -acetylcysteine is able to reduce levels of free radicals.
