The microbial ecology of foods, however, is concerned not only with organisms that become numerically or metabolically dominant but also equally involves manipulating the food environment to suppress growth of, or even eliminate, pathogenic microorganisms whose significance bears no relationship to their contribution to the microbial ecology of the product.
This journal is published by Springer. As its name implies, Microbial Ecology focuses strictly on research articles that are of interest to microbial ecologists.
Sort by: Article Awards. Congratulations to the winners of the FEMS Microbiology Ecology Article Award, Megan M Morris, Natalie J Frixione, Alexander C Burkert, Elizabeth A Dinsdale, and Rachel L Vannette for their paper 'Microbial abundance, composition, and function in nectar are shaped by flower visitor identity'. Over recent years, the journal Microbial Ecology has been revamped to provide an international forum for the presentation of high-quality scientific investigations into microbial ecology, and how microorganisms interact with their biotic and abiotic environments, with each other as well as with their neighbors and hosts. However, studies investigating host-microbe interactions in the field of ecology and evolution are dominated by 16S and ITS amplicon sequencing. While amplicon sequencing is a useful tool for describing microbial community composition, it is limited in its ability to quantify the function(s) performed by members of those communities.

Understanding how membership within complex and dynamic microbial communities relates to the function of that community is one of the key challenges facing microbial ecology (Widder et al. 2016). Microbial Ecology Description: Microbial ecology lies at the heart of functioning for almost every ecosystem on the planet, from the deep-sea vents and subsurface systems to human and animal well-being; from pristine marine and terrestrial environments to industrial bioreactor functioning.
The ISME Journal. The ISME Journal seeks to promote diverse and integrated areas of microbial ecology spanning the breadth of microbial life, including bacteria, archaea, microbial eukaryotes, and viruses. Contributions of broad biological interest and impact are especially encouraged.
Synthetic microbial ecology (like synthetic biology) is not a completely new discipline, but recent advances in both mathematical modeling, and genetic and metabolic engineering appear to bring us closer to the goal of controling the dynamic behavior of simple synthetic microbial assemblages.
